In May, United joined forces with US-based gaming giant Las Vegas Sands Corp and put forward proposals to redevelop a site adjacent to the Theatre of Dreams. A luxury five-star hotel, restaurants, a health club and sports bar were all set to be part of the complex, which would have been dominated by the new casino.

But, with Blackpool virtually certain to be awarded the only super casino franchise available once Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell had to hastily amend her proposals to get them through Parliament before the General Election, United officials knew it could be years before permission to proceed with the project was granted.

Faced with such a lengthy delay, they have opted not to tie up the resources, allowing them to use the land for alternative ventures at some point in the future.

United have stressed the decision had nothing to do with Malcolm Glazer's £790million takeover, which was not completed until after the original casino plans were drawn up.
