Thomas Doswell, who taught himself to play music in prison while serving 19 years on a rape conviction that was later overturned, will play on the same bill as blues legend B.B. King later this year.
Doswell, 46, was released from prison on Aug. 1 after DNA testing cleared him of the rape of a woman in 1986. He's the first Allegheny County defendant to have his conviction overturned by DNA testing.
As a youth, Doswell sang in a Pittsburgh band that played bar mitzvahs and other dates. In prison, Doswell taught himself to play the drums, guitar, bass guitar, flute, saxophone, piano and harmonica and also wrote 78 songs.
Promoter Buddy Kirschner booked King's show about the time Doswell was released from prison. Kirschner was struck by Doswell's story, and later his voice on an audition tape, and added him to the bill.
Officials of DRS Laurel Technologies of Richland Township said Monday that the company had been awarded a $30 million contract with BAE Systems of York to continue producing electronic cables for A3 Bradley combat vehicles that BAE makes for the Army.
DRS Laurel officials also said they had won an $83 million contract to produce sophisticated display consoles for Lockheed Martin, which makes equipment for the Navy.
U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., the top Democrat on the House defense appropriations subcommittee, said quality workmanship done by DRS Laurel is becoming well-known.
"People worry that when I leave office these jobs will be gone,' Murtha said. "But I can only help these companies build some relationships, I can't do the work."
Police aren't identifying the 46-year-old man, who will not be returned to the Stepping Stones Personal Care Home following Saturday night's alleged attacks. Cresson police didn't release details about the incidents until Monday.
The man is in the custody of the Cambria County Mental Health-Mental Retardation department and has been moved to another "custodial environment" while police continue their investigation, District Attorney David Tulowitzki said.
