According to a new survey of 1,656 Canadians who are married, in a common-law relationship or dating, four in 10 have vacationed without their partner.

"A separate vacation in and of itself is not a problem," says Owen Williams, an Ontario-based couples counsellor. "But, if couples are only taking separate vacations, it's usually an indicator of something else going on. A (negative) sign about the health of the relationship."

According to the Expedia.ca survey, conducted online earlier this month, higher-income couples are more likely to holiday apart than those who earn less than $60,000 a year (44 per cent versus 34 per cent).

Canadians without children are also more prone to taking separate vacations than those with children (41 per cent versus 34 per cent), as are men and women who have been together less than five years (16 per cent versus eight per cent) and those aged 18 to 34 (14 per cent versus eight per cent of older respondents).
